CRAWDADDIES WORLDWIDE: this website was made to document the management of Crawdads in Michigan.

HISTORY OF THE PROBLEM

Most every Michigander is familiar with the crayfish. Also called the crawdad, the crayfish is a crustecean group of species, some of which are native to Michigan. From mymlsa.org, "Unfortunately, Michigan inland lakes are threatened with several invasive crayfish species. The rusty crayfish (Orconectes rusticus) is already a common invasive in Michigan waters. Rusty crayfish are native to Ohio and Kentucky, but have spread to several Great Lakes states and beyond." Rusty crayfish pose an interesting problem to environmentalists. They come into our Great Lakes through two main ways. They are used by anglers as bait, or wash off of a fishing boat after a long day on the lake. These methods propogate non-native crayfish species within the Great Lakes that can cause issues for the environment.
